About Us

Susan Haas loves her job. Actually, Susan Hass adores her job. The Kansas native believes passionately in what she does. Just chatting with the effervescent, blue-eyed blonde, it's obvious that she and her husband Jim love helping people save money and beautify their homes with top quality, custom-crafted awnings.

For nonstop enjoyment of the outdoors, excellent UV protection and massive savings on energy bills, Susan and Jim know that awnings are one of the smartest choices any property owner can make.

In the sun storms of a Midwestern summer, outside living can be almost unbearable. Adding an awning lets home and business owners reclaim their deck or patio and use it for its intended purpose -- having fun. The increase in space, Haas says, is like adding a whole new room - a new room that costs very little, but adds big value to your home or business. "There's just is no other home improvement that offers so much, so quickly, for so little money," she says.

For Susan, Awnings by Haas is a people-centered business. Her favorite part of the job is when she and Jim get to meet new people. The pair belongs to about a dozen civic organizations, from Midtown to the Southland, and are always looking to join more. Maybe Susan's favorite venue for meeting people is the home shows. She and Jim do them three times a year.

"We love the home shows!" says Haas. "We set up a display with a 90-foot awning on a remote control. We probably have 50 or 60 couples who will talk to us. People just stop by and look and play with it and ask all their questions. Once they see what an awning can do, she says, people just go 'Wow!'"

After the initial conversation, "We come to your home or business and help you choose from about 250 fabrics," Susan says. "The material comes in about ten days. Jim puts it up and, that's it. We go away. People are just thrilled."

One of the most amazing things about awnings is that such a small change can make such a huge difference. The American Society of Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers says awnings can reduce a building's heat gain by as much as 65% on southern-facing windows and almost 80% on western exposures.  And, as opposed to blinds or drapes, an awning means you still get to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. During cooler months, well, simply retract your awning with a convenient remote control and let the sun shine in. With top-of-the-line, powder-coated aluminum alloy Somfy motor, you're assured a lifetime of reliable use.  Jim and Susan even offer awnings with built-in sun and wind sensors, extending and retracting your awning automatically.

It's not like this is a new technology. Awnings have been around for a long, long time. In Europe, where many houses were built before air-conditioning, "about 30% of the people have awnings. It's only about 3% here." As that number rises in the US, and right here in KC, energy costs will go down.

"Jim and I were at a event the other night for Kansas City Homes and Gardens -- the building and remodeling awards. We were looking around at all these new appliances that cost as much as a lot of people's cars. I said to Jim, 'We have the one, really unique thing here and are one of the only people in all of the Kansas City metropolitan area that handles this.'"
